January 7, 2021Lauren

I’m kicking off the new year with a new project, born from my love of greeting cards and my geeky fondness for postage stamps. (I collected stamps as a kid, and was legit ELATED to unearth a sheet of… Continue Reading →

Working on some stab bindings today, and very glad to have a drill. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Edition work means lots of repetition and sometimes achy hands, but working in batches is about the only way I can make books anymore. They take a lot of time to make from start to finish, but the end result is worth it. Hopefully these will be done this evening. Now on to sewing!
Here's a little gouache painting that I unearthed in the studio today. It's available in my Etsy shop now (link in bio), and it also exists as an archival print there, too. Sometimes I create archival prints from original paintings like this one, and sometimes the original painting is the only one around. ๐Ÿฆ‹ ๐Ÿฆ‹ ๐Ÿฆ‹ It's been a while since I painted in gouache, but finding this one made me want to start again.
Can you spot the teeny bird? Sound on to hear its big voice! Weโ€™ve gotten used to being awakened by the wrens, but the fella still says, โ€˜How can all that sound come out of such a tiny bird?โ€™ ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿชถ๐Ÿฆ
Sending my piece for the @penlandschool auction today! Penland remains one of my favorite places in the world, not just because of the creativity that blossoms there, but because of its wonderful spirit of community. Looking forward to the next time I can visit in person. โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ
Working on a little collage painting today. 2 layers in. #arteveryday #wip #wipart #monday #studiolife #birdnerd #carveouttimeforart
Had some leftover ink and pulled a couple of diving ducks in green. Sometimes thatโ€™s the best way to do some color tests. ๐Ÿ˜Š Iโ€™ll add these to the shop once theyโ€™re dry.
I've been making more time to draw each day, even if it's just doodling. Sometimes those drawings lead to nothing, and that's ok. (I like to think it calms me down in the frustrating times, and that's invaluable some days.) ๐ŸŒฟ ๐ŸŒฟ ๐ŸŒฟ But sometimes the drawings do turn into something more. Sometimes a print, and other times something as small as a greeting card. This drawing started as a goofy little doodle and ended up being both. ๐ŸŒฟ ๐ŸŒฟ ๐ŸŒฟPieces like this remind me to keep doodling, even when it seems like it's going nowhere, because you never know when inspiration will kick in and take you someplace entirely new.
Tidying up the studio this week, I found a few extra duck prints that I printed on super luxe cotton rag paper. I often experiment with a few different papers when planning an edition, so there are always a few unique variants out there.๐Ÿฆ† ๐Ÿฆ† ๐Ÿฆ† I've added these to my Etsy shop, so they're ready to fly away to new homes. These are 6 x 9 inches, printed with a lino block and a whole lot of love.
Sometimes daily doodles turn into something more. Last week, I was doodling dinosaurs, and then there was a cupcake. And then there was a birthday card with a goofy pun. [Sidebar: why do I have no dino emoji yet?] ๐Ÿฐ ๐Ÿฐ ๐Ÿฐ Cards pass my test when they make my fella laugh. Extra points if it's a snort-laugh. ๐Ÿ˜€
