Doodling on TP for a Good Cause: or Why I Shouldn’t Drink While Drawing

May 18, 2020Lauren

Answering the Call: Art for a Good Cause So last week, browsing the interwebs, I saw a call for artists to donate art for an upcoming auction to support Buncombe County Schools. (That’s the county that Asheville is in, for… Continue Reading →

The Love We Need Right Now

May 10, 2020Lauren

Searching for those Small Acts The last several weeks have been hard. I’ve limited my social media time, and limited my news-watching time. There’s an awful lot that feels like it’s spinning out of control, and there’s a lot… Continue Reading →

Carving Out More Time for Art

January 24, 2020Lauren

It’s been a while since I wrote a post. I’ve been feeling overwhelmed, and in a funk. I’d spiraled down to that place where I walk around in my slippers muttering (or hollering), “Why do I DO THIS? Why do… Continue Reading →

Today’s drawing: how does a crow say happy birthday? 🪶🪶🪶
After experimenting with some different stab bindings, I've found one I like for this next batch of journals. These are hardbound with a hinge to make for easy opening (and sketching!) and are made using some bright handmade papers I've had stashed away for ages. I couldn't resist adding a little bit of printing to these, using some leaf and bird blocks that were loafing in the studio. I've added a few to my Etsy shop (link's in the profile) and am about to order some new papers to expand the color palette.
Doing a little printing for book covers tonight. I unearthed some lovely handmade papers from the depths of the closet, and—you guessed it—put a bird on it. Printed some subtle leaves underneath, and then some happy blackbirds. Tomorrow: binding!
Today’s experiment: embossing leather for more miniature books. #bookbinding #bookbinder #handmade #etsysellersofinstagram #bookarts #weekend #arteveryday
Last night’s doodle went to an unexpected place. New designs are coming soon, and this weekend is going to be some much needed painting time. 🦋🦋🦋
Today’s drawing in progress: a floppy eared bunny. 🐰🐰🐰This week’s blog is a little perk into my daily drawing practice, and why it’s become valuable to me. 🌿 It’s partly meditative, partly experimental, and it reminds me of some very important things. 🌿 You can read more about it on my website (link in bio). Hope you’re doing something you love today!
I couldn't help myself. I made the cockatoos into 8 x 10 archival prints, and also made them in two different color variations: one in pink tones, and one in gold tones. My experimenting also led to a super bright yellow version, which is perfect for someone who really digs yellow. (That person is not me, but that person is out there!) 🌺 🌺 🌺 I had so much fun with this one that I started drawing a few more, and have been playing with colors I don't typically use much. My weekend project is to finish a couple more birds in this new series and do some test prints. 🌿 🌿 🌿 What color would you like to see in a monochrome print?
I have a whole flock of cockatoos ready to send out with orders, thanks to the awesome printing at @smartpress. I couldn’t be more pleased with these little guys and will send them out with all of my shop orders! Thanks, Smartpress! You rock. 🦋🦋🦋 #etsyshop #etsy #etsysellersofinstagram #birdnerd #illustrationart #28featheredfriends #illustrationartists #dailydrawing #arteveryday
I added a few new paintings to the shop today, including this little swallow. He's part of a new series of 6 x 6" paintings, acrylic on wood panel. It seems like my color palette is getting brighter on these dark winter days, but I think I'm ok with that. 🌺 🐦 🌿 What's your favorite bird? I just might paint it next!
